Experimental Facilities

Elements beyond fermium (Fm, Z=100) can only be produced at accelerator facilities. At the GSI, the double Penning-trap system called SHIPTRAP is installed behind the velocity filter SHIP at GSI. This is currently the only setup worldwide that allows high precision mass measurements of transfermium isotopes.
The SHIPTRAP-collaboration is headed by Dr. M. Block from the SHE Physics department at GSI.
Current research in the heaviest elements focuses on mass measurements in the range of Z=100-104 around the N=152 deformed shell gap.
